The Story of South Kirkby is dedicated to preserving and sharing the fascinating history of the towns of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe, a civil parish in West Yorkshire. Known in the Domesday records as Cherchebi, with the outlying settlement of Thorpe, South Kirkby and Moorthorpe have evolved through generations that have ties to royalty, wars, political revolution and much more. From plough to pick, generation by generation, this is a record of our shared ancestry.

The curator of The Story of South Kirkby is local resident, Matthew Thomas. Matthew is a graduate of Alcuin College at the University of York, with a background in archaeology and heritage, Matthew is a member of the Royal Historical Society and undertook a placement at the British Institute in East Africa, as an undergraduate. Matthew has also served the community as a Town Councillor, for South Kirkby & Moorthorpe Town Council. Matthew led a successful bid to have South Elmsall and Moorthorpe war memorial given listed status, by Historic England.
